     Calico does not refer to a breed of cat, it refers to a color pattern. For a cat to be considered a calico, it must have three colors...black, white, and orange. Variations of these colors can be gray,ginger and cream.
     Nearly all calico cats are female, Why is this? The answer lies in genetics. A cat's coat color is a sex-linked trait. Female cats have two X chromosomes, and males have an X and Y chromosome, and the coding for white is a completely separate gene. Since females have two X chromosomes they are able to display both black and orange as well as white. Males with only one X chromosome can only be black or orange.
     There is one case in which a calico cat can be male. In rare cases a male cat can have two X chromosomes and a Y chromosome. In most of these cases the cat is sterile.
