About Mary Jane

The Calico Cat

Calico does not refer to a breed of cat, it refers to a color pattern. For a cat to be considered a calico, it must have three colors...black, white, and orange. Variations of these colors can be gray, ginger and cream.
Nearly all calico cats are female, Why is this? The answer lies in genetics. A cat's coat color is a sex-linked trait. Female cats have two X chromosomes, and males have an X and Y chromosome, and the coding for white is a completely separate gene. Since females have two X chromosomes they are able to display both black and orange as well as white. Males with only one X chromosome can only be black or orange.
There is one case in which a calico cat can be male. In rare cases a male cat can have two X chromosomes and a Y chromosome. In most of these cases the cat is sterile.
